News Lawless Roleplay - help us stay alive!

Lawless Roleplay has always been a server against the odds. When we first opened our doors in 2013, everyone expected us to fail. However, we hit over 100 players and despite the numerous attacks which kept us offline for a few days, players kept on coming - they couldn't get enough. Fast forward today, Lawless Roleplay has been open for 6 years and for the past 2 years people have been claiming that Lawless Roleplay is dying, closing and failing. Yet we remain online with a striving and active player base.

I am personally going through a very rough time in real life for the past 2 years however the support and love I received from the community made me realise despite all the harsh words and arguments - you guys are a bunch of good people. I want to provide you with a safe, stable and fun community where you can unwind and enjoy your time at Lawless Roleplay.

Since the start of 2019, we closed the donation store which meant that I had to personally pay $400 a month to keep the server online. In the past few months, this has been a real struggle for me. With all the reasons above combined, I have been very demotivated to spend any time on the community and with the risk of closing down last month, I got to see so many community members step up and offer their help in keeping the server online. This melted my heart to see people who were willing to really step up to keep the server online so they and their friends can continue having fun.

As a result, I have opened the new donation store up and offering a 30% discount on all items until Sunday 25 August 2019 using coupon code "LONGLIVELRP".

Your donations are guaranteed, if we do not meet our monthly quota ($400) and are unable to pay the monthly fees, the server will be closed and you will be refunded 100% of your donation automatically. However, I believe the community won't let that happen.

If this is proven successful and the community can hold the burden of paying server bills then I will be more inclined to update the server more frequently with new features, bug fixes and adjustments.

Thank you,
Barney Phife

My mortgage repayments are $697 per month AUD, which is around $450 USD.

A SAMP server costs as much as my mortgage repayments for a house in regional Melbourne.

I want to believe.

im gonna do some quick maths

1. dedicated server - 100$
server.lawlessrp.com resolves to 217.182.36.95, which is within OVH's network range.
www.ipinfo.io/AS16276/217.182.0.0/16-217.182.36.0/23

This shows that no reverse proxy or whatsoever is used (most likely), so the server costs are limited to one server (we don't go through a bunch of servers to eventually connect with LawlessRP).

I'm sure LRP runs on the "GAME-32" server. All their dedicated servers provide DDoS migitations by OVH. They do offer virtual private servers, however given the fact that LRP has been known the last few years for not having a lot of issues with DDoS attacks, I assume that we are running on a dedicated server.

2. website - 30-80$
Xenforo license was probably bought in the early days, which cost around 100-160$. This was probably Barney's initial investment for Lawless. We don't need to renew the license, since it is a one time license. The website hosting however is something we have to pay; if it's expensive, it's max 100$ a year. Lawless Roleplay uses Cloudflare as HTTP proxy, which has a free basic plan.

3. ???????? - 10-20$
Maybe there are some additional servers/costs, such as the beta server or whatsoever.

This would be at max. 200 dollars. I think it would be better if invoices are actually published for the community, in order to convince people to donate.

I’m just stating my opinion here, but I think if updates and new features were added to the server, the server would’ve most likely seen more donations coming, was a better way to be doing so, and I’ll mention why as well.

Players would like to know what they are donating for, I love lawless but I haven’t actually played it for over a year due to having nothing to do other than collecting money from my properties. If we saw new exciting things in the server, it would have been easier for us to actually donate without anyone asking us to do so. I don’t really like saying this as I personally never donated, but did intend to do so till’ I saw the last update was at the time Toompert bought his very first business (long time ago..).

do not take me wrong here, I understand that donations are very needed to keep the server alive and participating us with that information is a needed step in order for us to grow back (if), but if the server had the very few good updates we were all waiting for, we would’ve never gotten ourselves into this hole .

What I’m trying to say is, if we got these much needed updates a while ago, donations were rolling as usual, updating the server might get them rolling back better than saying updates will be coming if y’all donate.

I have nothing but appreciation to Barney and his huge success with the server and I trust him with everything he is doing by respecting every step he is taking with no questions asked what-so-ever, but I really don’t think this is a good idea.
